They Were There: American Slaves Speak


The voice of the American slave was captured by slave narratives recorded under President Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation. In this text, meticulous historic research quantifying 1,279 narratives is overlaid with testimony from slaves. In doing so, historical data is brought to life in the words of the people who were there.
